Behavioural Learning Guides

These learning guides are designed to support the individual and their manager in identifying development requirements and creating a useful and robust development plan, based upon a self-directed learning approach.

Competencies are the behaviours and skills that an organisation values and wants to see in its people. In our competency framework, these qualities have been explicitly defined so that people understand what is expected of them and what high performance looks like. The competency framework therefore has a vital role to play in converting your organisation’s vision and values into practical reality. As part of your ambition to become a high performing organisation, you have undertaken a behavioural competence assessment, perhaps through a 360 degree feedback or an assessment centre but what happens after the feedback? In order to assist in developing individuals’ behavioural competence we have created a range of behavioural learning guides.

These learning guides are about the individual, their role and their own development. Rather than development being something which is “done to you”, the emphasis of these guides is to support the individual and their manager in identifying development requirements and creating a useful and robust development plan, based upon a self-directed learning approach. The self-directed approach to learning involves the individual taking the initiative and responsibility for their own learning, rather than waiting for the organisation to say what they should learn and how they should learn it.

The first section of these guides provide a summary overview of the structure of the behavioural competency framework. The guides then focus on the different methods by which people learn. This will help the individual to gain some insight in to their own preferred learning style in attempting to reach their goals. The guides then describe the behaviours in detail and provide an extensive list of resources and activities to utilise in working towards desired goals.

In these guides we have provided a useful starting point for activities and resources that can be used to help develop each of the behaviours. These guides can be bought off the shelf and is useful for individuals undertaking our 360 degree feedback process or one of our assessment centres. Facilitators of feedback may also find these guides useful tools in helping individuals to write their development plan.

As well as an off-the-shelf tool, these guides can also be tailored to your organisation, from inserting details of appropriate in-house training to tailoring the whole guide with your own competency framework and personal development processes.
